Dr. Eileen Borris

Author, Thought Leader, Healer of Nations

Eileen Ruth Borris, EdD, specializes in international conflict resolution, mediation, negotiation, dialogue, multi-track diplomacy, and peace building. She is a highly regarded speaker, author, consultant, and trainer in the areas of forgiveness, conflict resolution, and the healing of nations. Hailed as the leading expert in her field, Dr. Borris harnesses a unique set of skills and experiences gained over her past two decades of service as both a clinical and political psychologist. She designs and implements programs that escalate transformation in the way international conflicts are resolved, resulting in dramatic progress in places that had been ravished by centuries-old struggles. She is revered for changing society’s vision of peacekeeping and working unyieldingly towards reconciling world conflicts.

Since the 1980s, Dr. Borris has worked internationally to help rebuild more than fifteen of the world’s most volatile and war-torn countries, including Afghanistan, Liberia, Nigeria, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Lebanon, Israel, the Occupied Territories and the Republic of Georgia. She is the former president of Forgiveness International and still serves on the board of this organization whose mission is to advance individual and societal transformation through the practice of forgiveness in order to create sustainable peace. She has also served as Director of Training and Program Development at the Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy (IMTD) in Washington, DC, whose mission is to promote a systems-based approach to conflict resolution training and communication.

Dr. Borris is a prolific writer publishing many articles and books on the topic of forgiveness, from the personal to the political. His Holiness, the Dalai Lama wrote a foreword for both of her previous books on forgiveness. The first book, “Forgiveness the Ultimate Freedom,” is available in five foreign countries. “Finding Forgiveness: A 7 Step Program for Letting Go of Anger and Bitterness” is a self-help book published by McGraw-Hill. The books focus on the profound impact of forgiveness on multiple levels, ranging from individuals’ personal lives to the resolution of long-standing international conflicts. “Finding Forgiveness” was a finalist for “Books for a Better Life Award,” the winner for “Best Books for 2007” award in the self-help category and was chosen for the National Press Club 30th annual book fair.

Internationally Renowned Speaker

Dr. Borris is a popular speaker on the nuances of conflict, forgiveness, and reconciliation. She has been honored to speak at the 128th plenary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on “Forgiveness and the Healing of Nations.” By invitation of the United Nations, she also speaks to members of the UN, UN agencies, and nongovernmental organizations worldwide. She has shared the podium with such prominent people as Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland at the Aspen Institute and facilitated an Interfaith Dialogue with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and other prominent religious figures. On invitation by Marianne Williamson, Dr. Borris spoke at the Sister Giant Conference on “Can Political Forgiveness be the Answer”? Dr. Borris has made more than 30 radio and television appearances debunking myths about forgiveness and has been interviewed by Real Simple and O Magazine.

Consultant

As a consultant, Dr. Borris has worked in Indonesia for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), creating and instructing reconciliation workshops. She has consulted with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) to develop specialized peace building training programs for women in Tbilisi, Georgia. Dr. Borris has developed training programs in trauma-healing, forgiveness and multi-track diplomacy in Liberia through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Most recently as part of a USAID and Thunderbird for Good program, where she is was academic director and program developer for the Musharikat Project on the Power of Persuasion, Dr. Borris developed a curriculum based on the principles of persuasion to empower Afghan women to have a political voice and help change their societal norms.

Dr. Borris received the ATHENA leadership award for her work in empowering women around the world which was acknowledged by Governor Douglas Ducey of Arizona and Michael Crow, President of Arizona State University.

Dr. Borris has been invited to create and instruct peace-building programs in more than fifteen of the most unstable and war-torn countries. She has taught at the most prestigious universities in the world, including Thunderbird School of Global Management, where she works today, delivered multiple addresses to the United Nations, and has written two highly acclaimed books on the topic of forgiveness.
